Developmental Milestones for Infancy: What to Expect at Different Ages and How to Support Your Child’s Growth

Infancy is a period of rapid growth and development. Understanding the milestones your baby is expected to reach can help you support their progress and ensure they are developing healthily. Here’s a guide to what you can expect during the first year and how you can foster your baby’s growth.

0-3 Months

Milestones:

  • Physical: Lifting head while on tummy, moving arms and legs, and beginning to grasp objects.

  • Cognitive: Following moving objects with their eyes, recognizing familiar faces, and starting to coo and gurgle.

  • Social/Emotional: Smiling in response to others, enjoying playtime, and beginning to develop a sense of trust.

Support Tips:

  • Provide plenty of tummy time to strengthen neck and shoulder muscles.

  • Engage in face-to-face interactions and talk to your baby frequently.

  • Offer a variety of safe objects for your baby to look at and reach for.

4-6 Months

Milestones:

  • Physical: Rolling over, sitting with support, and reaching for and grabbing objects.

  • Cognitive: Exploring objects with hands and mouth, responding to their name, and showing curiosity about their surroundings.

  • Social/Emotional: Laughing, showing excitement, and beginning to recognize familiar people.

Support Tips:

  • Encourage rolling and sitting by placing toys just out of reach.

  • Play interactive games like peek-a-boo and sing songs.

  • Provide a safe environment for your baby to explore different textures and sounds.

7-9 Months

Milestones:

  • Physical: Sitting without support, starting to crawl, and transferring objects from one hand to another.

  • Cognitive: Understanding object permanence (knowing that objects still exist even when out of sight), responding to simple commands, and babbling.

  • Social/Emotional: Showing stranger anxiety, enjoying social play, and imitating sounds and gestures.

Support Tips:

  • Create a safe space for crawling and exploring.

  • Play hide-and-seek games to reinforce object permanence.

  • Encourage babbling by talking and reading to your baby.

10-12 Months

Milestones:

  • Physical: Pulling up to stand, cruising along furniture, and possibly taking first steps.

  • Cognitive: Using simple gestures like waving and pointing, understanding basic words, and exploring objects in new ways.

  • Social/Emotional: Showing preferences for certain people and toys, testing parental responses, and displaying a range of emotions.

Support Tips:

  • Provide sturdy furniture for your baby to pull up on and cruise along.

  • Encourage walking by holding their hands and offering support.

  • Respond to your baby’s gestures and words to promote communication skills.
